TAMPA, Fla. – Two women are recovering in a hospital Thursday morning after crashing into a tanker truck.

Around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, a 2016 Kia Sol was traveling eastbound on Adamo Drive near North 34th Street. The driver of the car didn’t notice a tanker truck stopped ahead at a railroad crossing. The Kia hit the rear corner of the tanker truck and rolled over, trapping both the driver and passenger.

Tampa Fire Rescue freed both women and took them to Tampa General Hospital.

Police said the woman who was the Kia’s passenger has serious injuries and is listed in critical condition, but she is expected to survive. The woman who was the car’s driver had minor injuries. The driver of the tanker truck was not injured.

Investigators are working to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The eastbound lanes of Adamo Drive were closed for several hours during the investigation but have now reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
