Hillsborough trash pickup might be cut to once a week: report

The move would cuts costs up to 30 percent, a county official says.

TAMPA, Fla. — Trash collection could go from twice a week to once a week under Hillsborough County's new contract with sanitation services, according to a report.

The Tampa Bay Times says the $188 million contracts under consideration would go into effect in September 2020.

The once-a-week collection would lead to a cost reduction of 20-30 percent, Hillsborough County Solid Waste Director Kim Byer told the Times. The county contracts with three companies -- Republic Services of Florida, Waste Connections and Waste Management -- for trash pickup.
