TAMPA, Fla. — A 24-year-old man admitted to drinking before he got behind the wheel and crashed his Jeep, killing his passenger, Tampa police say.
Nicholas Schreiber was heading north on S. West Shore Boulevard near W. Montgomery Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Saturday when his Jeep hit the median, crossed over and crashed head-on into a Toyota Camry, according to a news release.
The two cars burned before Tampa firefighters could put out the fire. It's believed Schreiber was speeding through the area.
Police say Schreiber's passenger died, while the driver of the Camry suffered minor injuries.
Officers who spoke with Schreiber at the scene reported him showing signs of impairment, in addition to him admitting to drinking.
He is charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and DUI property damage.
