Worker taken to hospital after small fire at Port Tampa Bay

The man's injuries are not life-threatening.

TAMPA, Fla. -- A worker was overcome by smoke while trying to put out a small fire on a ship at Port Tampa Bay, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

It happened just after 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Ybor Channel near the International Ship Repair & Marine Services facility on Penny Street in Tampa.

A spokesperson initially thought the man had fallen, but firefighters' investigation appears to indicate the issue was instead smoke inhalation.

Shipyard workers removed him from the area where the fire broke out, and an onboard crane was used to lift him to an adjacent dry dock ship. The victim was then lowered to a car and taken to Tampa General Hospital.

The man's injuries are not life-threatening.

Nobody else was hurt.
