BRADENTON, Fla. — The unfortunate sight of blue-green algae is starting to creep its way back into parts of Manatee County, our news partner WWSB reports.
Some of the algae has found its way into the waterways at the Robinson Preserve.
"The algae that’s eating that stuff up from the bottom goes through its life cycle, dies and floats to the surface," Manatee County Parks Director Charlie Hunsicker told WWSB.
People visiting the preserve have said it smells like "fish poo" and "roadkill."
Dead fish are being seen at both the Robinson and Perico Preserve as officials say the algae is taking away the oxygen.
The algae is not toxic, but people are being told not to swim or fish where it is present. Officials remain hopeful the conditions will go back to normal again shortly.
