For the first time, parents of the teenagers killed nearly two weeks ago when their car was driven into a pond are speaking out, questioning the events that led up to their daughters' deaths. They believe there are inconsistencies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office investigation.

“March 31, 15-year-old Laniya Miller, 15-year-old Ashaunti Butler and 16-year-old Dominique Battle lost their lives going in the pond,” says attorney Michele Whitfield with the Whitfield Law Group.

Now, the attorney for Laniya Miller's mother says it didn't have to end that way. The sheriff's office says all three girls were inside a stolen car that ended up in a pond in St. Pete. But the families have questions about exactly what led up to their deaths.

“At this point, were seeking answers for Laniya's mother. There’s inconsistencies that need to be addressed,” says Whitfield.

They say the sheriff focused more on the three girls' criminal history — although Laniya had been arrested only once and charges had been dropped — instead of concentrating on the death investigation.

“I’m sad I lost my child but even more sad with how story has been twisted,” says Natasha Winkler, Laniya’s mom.

She says that Laniya was not a thief — just a teenager who made a stupid mistake.

“I want the truth. I need answers. Last time I hugged my daughter, I didn't know it would be last time she’d be alive,” says Winkler.

10News WTSP pushed the attorney to clarify what mistakes they believe the sheriff's office has made, but she wouldn't.

“Not prepared to give theory on what happened,” says Whitfield.

They would only say that in time the truth will come out.

“We’ve done more investigating than sheriff’s office has done,” says Will Anderson, another attorney with the Whitfield group.

The sheriff’s office stands by its investigation. If anyone has information about this case, they are encouraged to come forward.
