Downtown St. Pete will have to wait a little longer to know the fate of the proposed Janet Echelman sculpture at Spa Beach.

A motion to move forward with designing the artwork was voted down Thursday.

But another motion, to reconsider it in two weeks, passed.

The St. Pete City Council also wants to look at other locations in the Pier District and asked if Echelman would consider reorienting the art to keep it at the proposed location.

Echelman was selected to come up with artwork for the new Pier. She grew up in the Tampa Bay area and has been inspired by fabrics. That's what led to a net sculpture design.

The deal with Echelman for the seven-story sculpture was worth $1.5 million.
