'Lucky to be alive' | Video shows firework ignite in man's hand in Polk Co.

A video released by deputies shows a man grabbing a mortar-style firework in his left hand and watching as it ignites from his hand.

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- Firework safety can be a huge cause for concern around the Fourth of July.

In a tweet that included some startling video, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said drinking and holding a mortar tube is a bad idea.

Deputies say a 35-year-old man grabbed a mortar-style firework and watched as it ignited from his left hand Wednesday night in Lake Wales.

"He injured his hand and chest and is very lucky to be alive," the sheriff's office said.

The man was treated at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.
