BARTOW, Fla. — A man waiting in a school parking lot accidentally shot himself in the leg while waiting to pick someone up, police said.
Around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Amel Villareal, 39, was in his vehicle in the visitor's parking lot at Summerlin Academy, waiting for a family member who was on campus after hours, authorities say.
Investigators say while waiting, he removed a concealed firearm from his waistband to put in into a vehicle compartment, but he accidentally fired the gun.
Villareal was struck in the right leg, investigators said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he is stable. No students were involved in the incident.
Criminal charges are pending, police said. The investigation is continuing.
