Tales from Polk Co. Sheriff's Office: Adults shouldn't use 'finders keepers' to take cell phones

The advice the Polk County Sheriff's Office shared in their post was spot on.

LAKELAND, Fla.—Leave it to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to make a stolen cell phone investigation into a grand Facebook tale.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office started their Facebook post with a bit of wisdom most people have heard in their lifetimes: “Finders keepers” doesn’t fly. The post says it doesn’t fly in kindergarten when it comes to finding a cool Peppa Pig pencil, and that it certainly doesn’t fly for adults finding cell phones on counters in Polk County.

The second part was exactly what happened at one Circle K convenience store to a man who forgot his cell phone on the counter, the Facebook post said.

The post goes on to say it’s okay—people forget things like phones, keys and money. But then the post takes an interesting turn to joke about Hollywood making four “Home Alone” movies where a family even forget their kid.

It was after that thought in the post their law enforcement instincts kicked in to think of a story line for Home Alone 5. “Home Alone 5: The McCallister Parents Get Arrested for Child Neglect,” they wrote in the post.

After the thoughts on the Home Alone movies were done, it was back to business for the Polk County page.

Deputies reviewed security footage and saw a different man go up to the convince store counter and take the phone that was not his.

The post says the man then got into a white four-door car the deputies said they believed to be his own, “but who knows? Maybe he found it too. Anybody missing a white four-door?”

Anyone with information was asked to call Detective Walsh at 863-499-2400, or, to remain anonymous, call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
