Runners participate in the inaugural Skyway 10K on March 4, 2018.

Organizers for the Skyway 10K announced registration for the event’s virtual run opens at noon Wednesday.

Anyone wanting to participate in the virtual run can visit the event’s official website for the registration link. Registration for the Skyway 10K virtual run will remain open until Jan. 7, 2019, at midnight.

The virtual run allows those who were unable to attend or register for the Skyway 10K bridge run to be able to participate in the event.

The second annual race across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is scheduled for March 3, 2019.

The event – which will have 8,000 participants – sold out within 20 minutes. It is the largest fundraising event for the Armed Forces Families Foundation.

Computer glitches prevented some runners from signing up for the 8,000 spots. However, 300-600 people who were told they weren't going to run will get the chance after all. Some registrants were entered more than once, so extra spots reopened once the errors were fixed.

Registration costs for the virtual run are $45 per person. Participants will receive a commemorative bib, a virtual run T-shirt and a medal. Organizers will mail the items to runners upon completion of the race.

Those participating in the virtual 10K run may run, jog, walk or even crawl 6.2 from any location. Once completed, entrants are asked to send an email to Virtual@Skyway10K.com with their full name, date and location they completed their 6.2 miles.

The deadline to submit virtual runs is March 1, 2019.

Anyone participating in the second Skyway 10K bridge run may also register for the Skyway 10K virtual run. However, participants should note that Skyway 10K virtual run registrations will not admit entry to the 2019 Skyway 10K bridge run over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Last year’s Skyway 10K raised $560,000 for the Armed Forces Families Foundation.
