SARASOTA, Fla. — The Coast Guard worked with the Sarasota Fire Department to save a man from a capsized boat about five miles west of Sarasota.
Fire rescue located the man on his 16-foot Hobie Cat and helped bring him to shore.
The Coast Guard says it got a call from the man's friend about him not returning at 11:39 p.m.
Rescuers responded by air and by boat. First responders said the man did several things right.
"He let close friends know where he was going and when he planned to return. He was also wearing a life jacket, which is one of the most important things a person can do to stay safe," Command Duty Officer Richard Hutchinson said. "Circumstances on the water are constantly changing, and filing a float plan and wearing a life jacket increases a person's chances of survival.”
Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.
