Portables could be coming to alleviate Venice High School overcrowding

The Sarasota County school district is looking to build a new high school, but that would take years.

VENICE, Fla. -- Venice High School is feeling some growing pains.

The school is over capacity with a total of 2,238 students.

That's nearly 250 students more than there’s space for, and that number is expected to double in five years when the population is estimated to reach 2,444 students.

The school board directed staff on Monday to research adding portables to help ease the overcrowding and meet class size limits.

But will the district be able to secure them?

"As long as there is a perimeter fencing, that would be a key part. If not, there will be contingency plans to be able to secure them; but that will be at the top of the discussion when we do that because we have a lot of facilities that have portables,” Sarasota School Board member Bridget Ziegler said.

The district will look into building a new high school, but that is a 15-18 year-long process.
