Riverview HS student faces charges for bringing handgun on bus

Sheriff's deputies located the student just before noon Thursday.

Update on Oct. 20, 2017: The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a 17-year-old Riverview High School student on weapons charges after he displayed a handgun to students on a school bus.

Anthony Duncan is charged with possessing a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and criminal mischief.

The bus Duncan rode on was on its way to Riverview High School, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies were called to Riverview High School around 7:30 a.m. Thursday on a report of a student who had displayed a handgun on a school bus.

The student did not make any threats or allude to any acts of violence, according to the sheriff's office.

Riverview HIgh School was among six Sarasota County Schools placed on lockdown Thursday.

The lockdowns were lifted after detectives arrested Duncan at a bus station on North Lemon Avenue in Sarasota.

The investigation is ongoing.

Original Story on Oct. 19, 2017: Detectives with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office are questioning a high school student who brought a handgun and ammunition on a school bus.

Sheriff's deputies located the student just before noon Thursday.

Six Sarasota County Schools were on lockdown Thursday, including Riverview High School, Polytechnical High School, Suncoast Technical College, Phillippi Elementary School, Wilkinson Elementary School and the middle school campus for the Suncoast School for Innovative Studies.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said the student got off the bus and did not go to school on Thursday morning.

Sarasota County Schools issued the following statement on its Facebook page:

Hello, this is a message from the Sarasota County School District. The Sheriff’s Office has located the high school student who reportedly had a gun on a bus this morning. The student is currently being interviewed by the Sheriff’s Office. All lockdowns have been lifted and normal activity has resumed on the affected campuses.

We’d like to thank the students, staff, and parents and guardians of students for cooperating during the lockdown: Riverview and Suncoast Polytechnical high schools, Suncoast Technical College, Phillippi and Wilkinson elementary schools and Suncoast School of Innovative Studies middle school campus on Wilkinson Road.

A special thank you to the students who did the right thing and reported what they saw on the bus.
