The Sarasota Police Foundation is trying to raise money to buy a new ballistic vest for each officer at the Sarasota Police Department.

Officers have been issued a vest that's considered a level two. The foundation wants to give all 170 officers an added layer, which costs $300 each.

The officer would wear it over the vest the officer already wears. It has a metal plate that could potentially be a lifesaver.

Sarasota Police Foundation President Michael Evanoff tells 10News there could be for situations like a school shooting or a problem at a business situation with a high impact rifle or high-velocity ammunition.

Donors have given about $4,000 already to this Facebook fundraiser. The goal is $50,000.
