Sarasota school district moves to two-way communication on social media

Sarasota school officials are trying to become more transparent in their communication strategy.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Sarasota School board is moving to have more open social media platforms.

Since 2014, the district has practiced just one-way communication with its social media -- meaning most comments beyond a few words or with keywords are not visible to the public.

During a workshop Monday, the district directed staff to draft a policy for a two-way communication system -- even if it means some negative comments will be posted.

Their goal is to be more transparent and improve communication with the community.

The district says comments that were hidden were not lost.

"We do currently archive if anyone were writing something that's not allowed on there; there is a function that backs it up," Sarasota School Board member Bridget Ziegler explained. "We do have that for public records purposes."

Ziegler says the board expects to vote on the new social media communication policy at its next board meeting.
