TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Supreme Court has denied convicted serial killer Bobby Joe Long a stay of execution and a new penalty hearing, keeping him on track for a May 23 execution date.

Long's attorneys had sought a stay of execution on Wednesday based on legal questions about the sentencing process, but on Friday, the state's high court denied it.

On Thursday, the attorneys sought a new sentencing hearing, saying there were errors in the proceedings. The state justices also rejected that request.

Ten homicides occurred in the Tampa Bay area over about 8 months, all attributed to Long. The victims ranged from 18 to 28 years of age. Investigators said most of the victims were strangled, and one was shot.
