ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- An explosion involving a manhole cover was reported at the intersection of 1st Avenue North and 3rd Street North in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

The explosion occurred around 10:45 a.m. Sunday morning as a manhole cover was blown off the street. Smoke was reported but no fire was observed.

Central Avenue between 2nd Street and 4th Street was closed for several hours as crews monitored the area.

Multiple fire and police units have responded to the scene as well as a utilities crew.
