Former FBI Director James Comes spoke with USA TODAY in his Virginia home Friday for an exclusive sit-down interview ahead of the release of his new book, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.
And never before in U.S. history has a current or former director of the FBI publicly described a president in such a scathing manner.
Comey calls Trump "morally unfit to be president." He says he believed it’s possible the Russians were holding compromising personal information over the president’s head.
And in an even more explosive comment, he tells USA TODAY Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page and Justice Correspondent Kevin Johnson that it would be less than honest to rule out the possibility that Trump had been compromised by one of the United States' primary foreign adversaries.
Comey's comments and his new book are fueling a combustible moment in Washington — one that could become a constitutional crisis. The extended interview with him is featured as a bonus episode on USA TODAY's daily news podcast, 5 Things.
