A Romney supporter listens to a speaker as he wears a 'Make America Great Again' hat at the Mitt Romney election party on June 26, 2018 in Orem, Utah.

A high school senior in California says her First Amendment rights were violated when her school refused to let her wear a “Make America Great Again” hat on campus.

Maddie Mueller is part of a conservative activist group at her school, CBS affiliate KGPE reported. The group asked its members to wear MAGA hats, but Mueller said school officials wouldn’t let her.

“How does being a patriot in trying to show pride in your country, how is that inappropriate?” Mueller told KGPE.

Mueller said she asked if she could wear any Trump hat with school colors on it, but the district said no, citing the dress code.

The dress code at her school, Clovis Unified School District, does not specify if political hats or shirts are allowed.
