Wednesday marks 48 years since Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed in Ceredo, West Virginia, killing all 75 people on board.

The plane was carrying 37 Marshall University Thundering Herd football players, five coaches, two athletic trainers, the athletic director, 25 boosters and a flight crew of five people.

The Nov. 14, 1970, accident is considered the deadliest tragedy for a sports team in U.S. history.

Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, is having its 48th Memorial Fountain Ceremony at noon ET Wednesday.

The daughter of one of the victims in the crash will serve as the event’s keynote speaker.

Marshall University will live stream the ceremony on its website.

In 2006, the movie “We Are Marshall” starring Matthew McConaughey was released, depicting the aftermath of the 1970 plane crash.

A National Transportation Safety Board report said: "the accident was the result of a descent below Minimum Descent Altitude during a non-precision approach under adverse operating conditions without visual contact with the runway environment."

The report also stated, "The Board has not been able to determine the reason for this descent, although the two most likely explanations are (a) an improper use of cockpit instrumentation data or (b) an altimetry system error."
