A 76-year-old pilot died Wednesday morning when his experimental plane crashed in Lorida, the Highlands County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies received a call at 6:32 a.m. saying a plane had crashed in the area of Arbuckle Creek Road in Lorida. Deputies called for assistance from the sheriff's office aerial unit, and about 8:30 a.m. the pilot found the crash site.
The pilot. Leon Adelstone, of Sebring, was dead at the scene. He was the only occupant.
Adelstone had taken off in the single-engine plane from Sebring Regional Airport.
Highlands detectives and crime scene unit are conducting an investigation; and an investigator with the Federal Aviation Administration is working with the team.
