Timeline: South Florida school shooting as developments unfolded

The suspected shooter is in custody, nearly two dozen are dead and 14 were transported to hospitals "with varying degrees of wounds."

PARKLAND, Fla. - Multiple people are dead and injured following a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County.

The school is located about 30 miles north of Fort Lauderdale.

The shooting happened at about 2 p.m., close to the school's dismissal time.

Here's a running timeline of updates as they come into the WTSP newsroom:

6:37 p.m.

"He went up and down the hallway just banging and shooting into the classrooms."

6:30 p.m.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel confirmed 17 dead in today's shooting:

  • 12 died inside the school.
  • 2 died outside the school.
  • 1 died off-campus.
  • 2 died at the hospital.

The suspected shooter had at least one AR-15 rifle and used "multiple magazines," Israel said.

6:16 p.m.

At least 12 people are dead from the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, CBS News reports.

6:08 p.m.

Nicolas Cruz has been taken to Broward County Sheriff's Office headquarters, CBS Miami reports.

Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie described today's shooting as the "worst of humanity."

5:46 p.m.

Nicolas Cruz appeared "to have pulled the school fire alarm causing chaos and then began shooting," a law enforcement source told CBS News.

5:30 p.m.

The suspected school shooter has been identified as former student Nicolas Cruz, 19, a federal official told the Associated Press.

5:10 p.m.

A SWAT team is clearing the school, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.

5 p.m.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel gave a brief update on the shooting, describing the incident as a "horrific, homicidal, destable act":

  • The suspected shooter, who is approximately 18 years old, was found off campus by a police officer.
  • He attended the school at one point but it was not immediately known why he left.
  • He was arrested without incident.
  • 14 people were transported to area hospitals "with varying degrees of wounds."

4:57 p.m.

Sen. Marco Rubio: "Today is that terrible day you pray never comes."

4:53 p.m.

Attorney General Pam Bondi released a statement regarding today's shooting:

“Praying for everyone involved in today’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I am on the way with my victim advocates and we will be available in full force to help all victims and their families with any services they need.”

4:39 p.m.

The suspect has been taken to a hospital, CBS News reported. It was not immediately known why.

CBS4 Miami captured footage of the suspect being taken into custody.

4:23 p.m.

Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie responded to the school shooting:

"There are numerous fatalities. It's a horrific situation. It's just a horrible day for us."

4:19 p.m.

"There are a number of fatalities, as I've been told by the school superintendent," Sen. Bill Nelson said. "How many that is I can't tell you. I don't know."

4:17 p.m.

A student told CBS News that the shooting happened in the freshman building of the school.

4:13 p.m.

The shooter is in custody, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

4:09 p.m.

It appears someone is in custody, according to aerial footage from CBS Miami.

3:53 p.m.

President Donald Trump has responded to the active shooter situation, tweeting that "no child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school" and that "we are working closely with law enforcement on this terrible Florida school shooting."

3:47 p.m.

Jeiella Dodoo, a student at Douglas High School, told CBS News that it was fourth period at the school and it was about seven minutes until the bell when the fire alarm went off.

"We thought it was a drill," she said. "We already had one this morning. We evacuated as normal. We were waiting when we heard gunshots. One of the students thought it was not that serious and one guy was like we did hear gunshots."

Jeiella said she heard six gunshots.

3:43 p.m.

Broward County Schools sent out a brief update, stating that shots were fired just before the school's dismissal.

3:39 p.m.

Caesar Figueroa, a parent of a student at a school, described the scene as "a war zone" to CBS Miami.

He said his daughter heard eight shots and that she's in the 700 building while the shooter is on the third floor of the 1200 building.

He is texting back and forth with her.

"My daughter is still trapped in the closet," he said. "She's afraid to speak. I told her to not call me so no one will hear her voice."

3:29 p.m.

The Associated Press is reporting that the shooter is still at large.

3:26 p.m.

The FBI is responding to what is "very much an active scene," CBS News reports. It is unknown where the shooter is.

3:24 p.m.

Gov. Rick Scott has been briefed on the school shooting.

2:55 p.m.

An active shooter has been reported at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Coral Springs, which is located about an hour north of Miami, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
