Voter registration in Florida has been extended 6 more days -- to Oct. 18 -- because of Hurricane Matthew.

U.S. District Judge Mark Walker had ruled earlier this week to extend the voter registration deadline in Florida today to Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016.

Walker based his decision on the case brought forth by the Florida Democratic Party on the recent impacts of Hurricane Matthew on the state, according to an article by the Tampa Bay Times. This decision was originally contested by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who wanted to keep the original voter registration deadline to 5 PM on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Walker stated, "Quite simply, it is wholly irrational in this instance for Florida to refuse to extend the voter registration deadline when the state already allows the governor to suspend or move the election date due to an unforeseen emergency."
