Bush 41: Veterans to pay tribute to last U.S. president who saw combat

When President Bush makes his final journey west, veterans are "coming from a bunch of little towns" to salute him.

NAVASOTA, Texas — When the train carrying President George H.W. Bush comes through Navasota, Carl Dry will be standing next to the tracks saluting a man he deeply respected.

The Korean War veteran and local VFW Post Commander said Wednesday veterans from all over the Brazos Valley are likely to follow suit.

“This is going to be huge for the area,” he said. “When we lose one of our own, we want to show respect.”

Seventy miles northwest of Houston, Dry is hanging American flag after American flag in his corner of Grimes County.

When President Bush makes his final journey west, Dry with veterans "coming from a bunch of little towns," will be there.

Losing the last American president to see combat worries him, more than he cares to discuss. We're losing leadership, he says. And Dry is hardly alone in that feeling.

Chuck Herman helped start the Bush School at the Texas A&M University campus. He said Bush's military service allowed him to see the world in a completely different way.

"I think that was an enormous benefit, gave him insight into a cross section of the United States was like," Herman said.

Navasota City Council Member Josh Fultz said he expects a big crowd Thursday. He said city officials have taken calls from all over the world.
