TAMPA, Fla. — In downtown, his name is lit up in lights at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts.

David Straz, a community philanthropist, hopes to make the city of Tampa a shining beacon in America as its mayor.

Originally a Wisconsin native, Straz moved to Tampa in 1980.

He has built a campaign based on LGBTQ equality, equal pay for women, gun safety, protecting the environment, developing affordable housing, increasing the minimum wage to $15 and job creation.

He worked to develop a network of 26 community banks in Wisconsin before moving to the area, only to build another network in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, according to his website. It's this area where he met and married his wife, Catherine, and raised a daughter.

Straz sold off his business to focus on the David A. Straz Jr. Foundation and other community initiatives.

Straz graduated from Marquette University.
