TAMPA, Fla. — The city's former police chief, Jane Castor, is looking to take on a new mission.

After 31 years in law enforcement, spending six of those as chief, Castor put away the badge in 2015. She was the city's first female to hold the top post and the first openly gay one.

Now, she's running for mayor.

Castor says her roots are in Tampa; her campaign website says she bought her first house in Seminole Heights in 1982 and has remained since.

It might come as no surprise Castor emphasizes her experience in policing in promoting a more safer city. She claims to have reduced crime by 72 percent under her leadership and contends she'll use her law enforcement background to help forge stronger relationships between city staff and citizens in their own neighborhoods.

Housing and transportation are two other top priorities.

Castor graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1977 and attended the University of Tampa.
