MIAMI-DADE, Fla. — A 15-year-old teen is facing manslaughter charges in the deaths of two of his friends after police say he was playing with a gun when it accidentally discharged.
The 15-year-old was hanging out with his 15 and 14-year-old friend when the shooting happened, CBS affiliate WFOR reports. One round hit both of the boys.
“For me, it’s real sad to see two kids lose their lives like this," a neighbor told WFOR.
One of the boys who was killed was a student in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools while another was a charter school student. Grief counselors were sent to both schools for other students to meet with.
“It is disturbing. It is heartbreaking. One gun, one bullet destroyed three lives. Two young teens are killed. A third one arrested,” Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho told WFOR.
The superintendent and police agree parents need to be more careful and educate their children around guns and be mindful of where the guns are kept in the house.
WFOR reports the state plans on charging the teen as an adult, which was discussed at a hearing.
The next hearing is scheduled for Dec. 17 as the teen continues to be held in a secure detention center.
