WEEKI WACHEE , Fla. — The Nature Coast is known for its wildlife and natural beauty. But this past weekend the owner of local paddle boarding company SUP Weeki spotted something highly unusual sighting on the river— dolphins.
Owner Pam Napp, who runs daily nature tours along the river, says dolphins have been spotted in the river before, but rarely as far up river where the water is only 3 to 4 feet deep in some spots and crystal clear.
“You just never know what you might see,” said Napp, who captured video and photographs of the rare sightings.
Now her video is making waves on social media.
“The video shows them frolicking and just zooming through the water,” said Napp.
Some of those commenting on the video say they, too, have seen dolphins in the river, but Monday’s sighting was unusual enough that wildlife officers came to check on the dolphins’ condition.
“They looked healthy, looked very happy chasing the fish up the river, but we did have the FWC come in and they did take a look at them.”
