Virtual reality takes indoor skydiving to new heights

With virtual destinations like the Swiss Alps, Southern California and Dubai, V.R. flights can help scratch that skydiving itch.

TAMPA, Fla. — Indoor skydiving gives people the feeling of flight without having to jump out of an airplane.

While the sensation is said to be similar to the real thing, the view is not. Now, thanks to technology, the sights of a 13,000-foot freefall are being brought indoors.

iFly Indoor Skydiving is now offering virtual flights, combining virtual reality with flying in one of their wind tunnels.

“Simply put they found a way to fasten a VR headset to one of our standard headsets,” iFly flight instructor David Lang said. “So you can be visually immersed in a skydive while your body is experiencing the sensation of a skydive in a wind tunnel.”

With virtual destinations like the Swiss Alps, Southern California and Dubai, Lang says a VR flight can help scratch that skydiving itch.

“If you’re looking for the freefall sensation without the fear of getting out of an airplane, the fear of heights, all those elements are kind of recrafted to be able to experience that, without having to deal with that particular situation," Lang said.

If you want to try VR indoor skydiving, it cost $96.95 for two training flights and one VR flight.

Standard iFly prices start at $59.95 for first-time flyers.
