LAS VEGAS – The National Baseball Hall of Fame will induct at least two members next summer, but former outfielder and longtime manager Lou Piniella won’t be one of them.

Piniella, 75, was one vote shy of election into baseball’s Hall of Fame on Sunday.

The Tampa native and former Rays manager (2003-2005) received 11 votes from the 16-person Today’s Game Era Committee. Twelves votes are needed for induction.

The era includes 1988-today in baseball. The committee elected designated hitter Harold Baines and closer Lee Smith into the Hall of Fame.

Here are the voting results:

  • Smith: 16
  • Baines: 12
  • Piniella: 11

The others up for consideration – Albert Belle, Joe Carter, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser, Davey Johnson, Charlie Manuel and George Steinbrenner – each got less than five votes.

Piniella will have to wait until 2021 for Hall of Fame consideration from the Today’s Game Era Committee.
