Bird's nest knocks out power to the Trop, delays Rays game

It's the second time in two months the lights have gone out during a game.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A power outage caused by a fallen bird's nest delayed play at Thursday's Tampa Bay Rays-California Angels game at Tropicana Field.

Fox Sports said on Twitter the outage has "impacted our broadcast."

Thursday's outage delayed the game 10-15 minutes before play resumed.

The team said the outage was caused by a fire at a power substation. A spokeswoman with Duke Energy said the fire began when a bird's nest fell inside the 16th Street Substation and caught fire.

Aside from the Trop, 12,900 customers lost power, Duke Energy said.

Social media quickly filled up with photos from inside the darkened stadium.

This is far from the first time the Trop has been hit with power problems. Last month, a power outage halted play between the Rays and the New York Yankees.
