ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays will honor the late saxophonist who was beloved in the community for playing outside of Tropicana Field before and after games.
The team will honor Max Pierre before its home game March 31 against the Houston Astros, according to Pierre’s nephew Dennis.
Max Pierre died in January after having a stroke. He was 60 years old.
Dennis Pierre said a member of the organization said the moment of silence will be part of a bigger tribute paid to other members of the team that died during the offseason.
Members of the family plan to travel to the game from out of state. The late saxophonist also had ties to Cincinnati and New Orleans.
Max Pierre was known throughout Tampa Bay for playing his saxophone for nearly 20 years outside Tropicana Field, Amalie Arena and in Ybor City.
“He loved his saxophone and I can say he really loved Tampa,” his brother James Pierre Muhammad told 10News in January.
First pitch on March 31 between the Rays and Astros is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET. The game marks the conclusion of the two teams' four-game series during Major League Baseball's opening weekend.
