Poles pierce through semi-truck's windshield on I-275

The driver told FHP a car him off, causing him to slam on his brakes and two of the poles to break from their tie-downs.

TAMPA, Fla. — A 33-year-old semi-truck driver is doing OK after two concrete poles he was carrying on his trailer broke loose and came through his back window and into his front window Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver said a car had been parked on the outside shoulder of Interstate 275 southbound, south of North Lois Avenue, when it pulled into the traffic lane.

They told FHP the car then cut him off, causing him to slam on his brakes and two of the poles to break from their tie-downs.

The two poles, each weighing 5,467 pounds, came through both windows and landed on the highway in front of the truck while the upper portion of the poles remained in the cab, FHP said.

The accident caused momentary traffic delays as law enforcement cleared the scene. FHP says approximately 85 feet of skid marks were observed.

Authorities say the driver is doing fine and no other injuries were reported.
