Tampa International Airport celebrates opening of new shops, restaurants

The new shops and restaurants are Phase 1 of a three-part improvement project at the airport.

TAMPA, Fla. — At most airports, fliers just want to get out, but Tampa International Airport's new look has some travelers wanting to stay.

“The shops are gorgeous,” traveler Lynn Roman said. “I wish I had more time.”

The airport unveiled dozens of new shops and restaurants Saturday, featuring local businesses and products. Some of the local restaurants at the airport include a Burger 21, Ulele and Four Green Fields.

“It's really a lot more upscale than a lot of the airports that I've been to,” Roman said.

This shops and restaurants, along with a new rental car center and SkyConnect train, is Phase 1 of the airport's three-part improvement project.

Now, the airport is on to Phase 2. It includes a commercial area with a hotel and expanded curbsides. There will be overnight curbside closures during this phase. Right now, the red curbside is closed overnight.

The final phase is a brand new terminal with 16 gates. The finished product is years away, but it should make your travel even smoother. The airport will be able to accommodate millions more passengers every year.
