'Brief' tornado touches down in Sarasota

The NWS estimates the funnel touched down south of US Highway 72 and just east of Interstate 75.

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla — Some in the Tampa Bay area's southern county of Sarasota caught quite the sight Friday evening as the NWS confirms a "brief" tornado touched down in Sarasota.

The NWS estimates the funnel touched down south of US Highway 72 and just east of Interstate 75. Not too far from the Twin Lakes baseball fields.

10 Tampa Bay viewer Dr. William Cole caught a glimpse of the action around 8:20 p.m. while driving on I-75. But just about as quickly as it was spotted, it slowly dissipated.

Local photographer Liesl Walsh from Venice also caught a glimpse of the tornado while near the Jacaranda exit of I-75.

While Kris Shroyer was able to snap this shot while on the road. You can see the funnel stretch from the sky all the way to the ground ahead of it disappearing.
