Heat and humidity are no strangers to summer in Tampa Bay. But occasionally, the combination of these two get so high that they become life-threatening.
While Tampa has never seen an air temperature reach 100 degrees, the heat index, what it feels like to your body due to the combination of the heat and humidity, can reach temperatures more than 110 degrees.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Ruskin says, “When high temperatures rise into the mid-to-upper 90s and dew points into the mid and upper 70s, it creates dangerous heat.”
The NWS told 10 Tampa Bay that they typically issue a Heat Advisory when the heat index is expected to reach a temperature between 108 and 112 degrees with 24 hours. The forecast calls for the air temperature alone to reach the mid to upper 90s through Saturday.
The first Heat Advisory of the summer was issued today. We’ll like need one issued again tomorrow and Friday, at least.
With the infamous Florida humidity, it’s not uncommon to see a heat advisory issued for Tampa Bay. The NWS notes that a Heat Advisory typically needs to be issued at least 4-5 times each summer.
The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. You should:
- Stay hydrated
- Stay inside as much as possible or take frequent breaks
- Wear lightweight, lightly colored clothing
- Take it easy
Be sure to check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
If you think you or someone you know may be experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately.
