TECO: Power restored to about 280K customers impacted by Hurricane Ian

Tampa Electric said about 16,500 customers remain without power.

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Electric said a vast majority of its customers impacted by Hurricane Ian now have their power restored.

As of 5 p.m. about 280,000 customers, or 94 percent, have restored power, but about 16,5000 customers still have no power in their homes, TECO said in a news release.

Portions of eastern Hillsborough County and Polk County reportedly suffered more damage to the storm but should have power restored by Monday night. Customers with more complex damage may have to wait longer for their power to turn back on.

“These final days of restoration are largely focused on labor-intensive outages, including several areas with severe damage,” Archie Collins, president and chief executive officer of Tampa Electric, said in a statement. “These repairs will take some time. Rest assured, we will not stop until every customer is restored.”

The company said it will start contacting the remaining customers Sunday night and Monday to provide updates for those without power.

Crew members are working to restore power to communities that were heavily impacted by Hurricane Ian, TECO said.

"Customer Service has 24-hour coverage – and extra staff on hand – to take emergency and outage-related calls," TECO said in a news release. "The company also has assistance from other utilities to take weather-related calls."

The company will reportedly suspend disconnections for nonpayment.
