TAMPA, Fla. — A heat wave is rolling across the Tampa Bay area.
While the Sunshine State is no stranger to heat, it’s important to keep in mind the high temperatures can be dangerous.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said extreme heat causes more than 600 deaths every year.
Here are a few ways to stay safe when the heat hits.
1.) Stay hydrated. The CDC recommends people drink plenty of liquids even if they don’t feel thirsty.
2.) Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as possible.
3.) Take cool showers or baths to cool down if you’ve been in the heat.
4.) Schedule outdoor activities carefully. The CDC says if you are spending time outside you should wear loose, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
5.) Limit cooking times. The CDC says using the stove or oven to cook will make your home hotter.
The CDC says the main things that affect the body during extremely hot weather are personal factors and high humidity.
