FROSTPROOF, Fla. -- Two Frostproof High School students have died and three others are hurt after a crash on U.S. Highway 27 at Princeton Avenue in Polk County.

After 6 a.m. Friday morning, 18-year-old Jorge Lara was driving himself and his 15-year-old sister Melanie Lara to Frostproof High when the Jorge made a turn off Princeton Ave. into the oncoming path of a white Chevrolet Silverado.

The Silverado crashed into the Lara's Jeep Liberty, killing the brother and sister.

Jorge and Melanie Lara were killed in a crash Friday morning when their Jeep Liberty traveled in the oncoming path of the white Chevrolet Silverado.

Three men who were in the Siverado truck were transported to area hospitals. They were identified as Jose Vazquez-Rivera of Bartow, 23, Francisco Herrera, 23, and Luis Lazos-Gomez, both of Wahneta. They suffered non-life threatening injuries and are expected to recover.

Polk County Sheriff's Office reported that speed, impairment or distractions were not factors in the crash. PCSO said that Jorge apparently did not see the oncoming truck when he made a turn onto US-27.

The crash shut down southbound US-27 for five hours Friday morning. All lanes are open.
