WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A family is likely feeling extra thankful after good Samaritans on a boat came to the rescue after their car plunged into a lake over the weekend.
The Winter Haven Police Department says a family was driving on First Street near Lake Silver when the car's steering wheel locked up while the car was driving around a curve. The car plunged into a lake.
As the car began to submerge, Andrew Petzold rushed over with his boat to help. He broke the driver's side window, pulling the driver out. Other people worked to help rescue the family, including the wife and 2-year-old daughter.
All three of the family members were rescued before the car completely sank. The family appeared uninjured but were checked out at a nearby hospital, as a precaution.
Police worked to retrieve the submerged car but were more thankful that everyone was safe.
"This is just one more example of the wonderful citizens in Winter Haven coming to the rescue without hesitation," Public Safety Director Charlie Bird said. "This family undoubtedly survived this crash because of these good Samaritans who took no regard for their own safety to ensure the family was rescued."
