The Tampa Bay Rays top pitching prospect has a torn UCL and will likely have Tommy John surgery.

Right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell was injured throwing live batting practice on Thursday.

The team recommended Honeywell have the surgery, according to Rays broadcaster Neil Solondz. However, the team didn't indicate if Honeywell will seek a second opinion or when the surgery is scheduled.

The surgery would keep the 22-year-old pitcher out for the entire 2018 season.

The Rays drafted Honeywell in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

Honeywell is the 14th ranked prospect by Baseball America.
