Thousands of gallons of sewage spills into Siesta Key canal

Thousands of gallons of raw sewage spilled Tuesday afternoon into the Grand Canal in Siesta Key. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection said the Lockwood Ridge booster station failed, which made the master station spill about 36,000 gallons of sewage into the Grand Canal near Oakmont Place. The state DEP said about 14,700 gallons were recovered. The department said the Lockwood Ridge booster station is designed to "relieve the high force main pressure from the Siesta Key Master Lift Station." The DEP said the spill was stopped, and lime was distributed in the immediate area.
