A Port Richey man was in bad shape Wednesday, but what first appeared to be an attack by his own dog was not, Pasco County officials say.

Pasco sheriff's deputies and animal control officers got a call about 5 p.m. that sent them to a home in the 8600 block of Paxton Drive, where John Dunleavy, 42, had apparently been attacked by his 2-year-ol pit bull.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the dog has been seized and is with animal control.

Officials said, however, that Dunleavy had suffered a separate medical episode, and that the dog's bites appeared to be superficial.
