BARTOW, Fla. (WTSP) -- They say if at first you don't succeed, try and try again.

Gerald J. Cochran has taken that saying to heart.

Cochran, 79, has run for Bartow City Commission 25 times straight. He doesn't have a phone. He doesn't spend money on campaigning.

He just stands outside the polling place with a sign on Election Day.

“It lets people know that I'm still in there,” he said.

Cochran said he's gone to just about every city commission meeting for the past 50 years. If elected, he'd like to lower electric bills for people in Bartow and cut back on city fees he says are too high.

“I wish every citizen would take that level of interest in local government and attend all the meetings and be familiar with your commissioners but the important issues that they're facing,” Polk County Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards said.

The election is on April 3.
