Florida's wildfire season is here: What you need to know

Tampa Bay residents need to know they are at risk if they live near a wooded or conservation area or even swamp land.

The wildfire danger is currently either moderate or high in every Tampa Bay area county.

Tampa Bay residents need to know they are at risk if they live near a wooded or conservation area or even swamp land.

It is currently Florida's wildfire season, and it is expected to be bad this year, partly because of all the debris left behind by Hurricane Irma.

Forestry officials want everyone to take this seriously so they can better prepare their homes in the event of a wildfire.

"This is great. They have rocks, cement, they have a chain link fence. All those things help us help them fight that fire," said Florida Foresty spokesperson Judy Tear.

Tear showed 10News some simple things one family did, that likely saved their home from the Silver Palm Wildfire. The bottom line is this: If you live near a conservation or wooded area, Florida Forest Officials say there's one big thing you need to do as soon as possible.

"Take a walk around that 5-foot perimeter of your house and trim back those trees, make sure that you have none of the nature on top of your house or in that 5-foot perimeter," Tear said.

It is also recommended you have a go bag for important documents, money, flash drives and medications because when a wildfire threatens, you may only have hours or even minutes to get out.
