Hillsborough County man handling pistol accidentally shoots self in head, deputies say

It's believed the victim was unloading a .45 caliber pistol when it fired, with the bullet hitting him in the head.

WIMAUMA, Fla. -- A man accidentally shot himself in the head during a gathering early Sunday morning.

The man, whose identity has not been released, is in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office news release.

Deputies were sent around 3:40 a.m. Sunday, March 11, to a home in the area of Dug Creek and Saffold roads on a report of a shooting.

About 15 people were at the location where the man was shot, deputies say. It's believed the victim was unloading a .45 caliber pistol when it fired, with the bullet hitting him in the head. The man was flown to the hospital, where he is undergoing surgery.

Authorities don't suspect the shooting to be suspicious at this time.
