Overcast skies make it hard for crews to battle recycling yard fire

Crews working the fire said visibility was low, making their jobs extra challenging.

TAMPA, Fla. -- A fire broke out Sunday morning at the Trademark Metals Recycling facility near the Port of Tampa Bay.

Hillsborough Fire Rescue crews were dispatched just before 10 a.m. to the two-alarm fire on Port Sutton Road. There, they found a 25-foot pile of metal burning. It took crews roughly an hour and a half to get the situation under control.

Firefighters used an elevated attack strategy that incorporated both foam and water, but low visibility from Sunday's storms mixed with the smoky haze didn't help their efforts.

Eventually, the facility's claw had to be used to dismantle the pile of metal, allowing emergency crews to fight the inner hot spots.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
