Massive manta ray spotted in waters just off Pinellas Co.

Tampa Bay Watch staff says it appeared to be between 8- and 9-feet wide!

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- What a sight! A massive manta ray was spotted by a Tampa Bay organization just off the Pinellas County coast.

The Tampa Bay Watch staff was doing boat safety drills near the Shell Key Preserve when they noticed what they first thought was a dolphin. They looked a little closer and noticed it was a manta ray that appeared to be between 8- and 9-feet wide!

The environmental scientists with Tampa Bay Watch quickly took down the exact location, water depth, estimated size and more details and sent them on to the Marine Mega Fauna Foundation.

The video posted to Facebook was taken by Audrey Mitchell, who is a Tampa Bay Watch environmental educator.
