TAMPA, Fla. — A car engulfed in flames along Interstate 275 on the Howard Frankland Bridge early Monday caused lengthy delays for commuters.

The car fire was reported around 6 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the bridge. Firefighters quickly responded and the fire was put out around 20 minutes later.

The driver of the car, a 34-year-old man, somehow crashed into the barrier wall, which caused the car to catch on fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Traffic cameras showed drivers were able to get by via one northbound lane. The Courtney Campbell Causeway and Gandy Bridge are alternate routes drivers can use.

However, much of the earlier morning backups have since been cleared.
